Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, also known as CTE, is a degenerative brain disease that may affect athletes who have had repeated blows to the head. Traumatic brain injuries, including concussions, and repeated hits to the head, called subconcussive head impacts, may lead to CTE. According to the Boston University CTE Center, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a degenerative brain disease found in athletes, military veterans, and others with a history of repetitive brain trauma. Most of what we have learned about CTE has come from the research of Dr. Ann McKee, director of the VA-BU-CLF Brain Bank, who has revolutionized our understanding of CTE. From left to right, they show a normal brain, the brain of a person with mild CTE, and the brain of a person with severe CTE. CTE is a brain disease that results from changes in the brain. CTE can affect areas of the brain involved with regulating behavior and emotions. These changes can affect how a person thinks, feels, acts, and moves.
