Gervais' beaked whale (Mesoplodon europaeus), sometimes known as the Antillian beaked whale, Gulf Stream beaked whale, or European beaked whale (from which its scientific name is derived) is the most frequently stranding type of mesoplodont whale off the coast of North America. Because of a low profile at the surface as well as small, hardly observed blow, this species is insufficiently explored and difficult to spot at sea. Life span is unknown for this species, but it can be, at least, 48 years old. Newborns are probably about 2m long. Also known as the Antillean Beaked Whale, Gervais’ Beaked Whales (Mesoplodon europaeus) are one the largest species of the Mesoplodon genus but still little is known about them. Gervais’ Beaked Whales have been incidentally taken as by-catch in fishing gear, such as pound nets off the U.S. Atlantic coast and potentially in drift-nets & gill-nets. As adults, Gervais’ beaked whales can reach estimated lengths of about 15-17 feet (4.6-5.2 m) and weigh at least 2,640 pounds (1200 kg). Gervais’ beaked whales are known to reach lengths of up to 5m and weights of more than 1000kg; females are usually larger than males.
