Unlike most of the characters at the end of season 5, Damon did not make it back from the other side with Bonnie before it collapsed. After taking the cure, Damon sacrifices his own love for Elena, and instead compels her to leave town for good and forget everyone from her past.

All signs point to yes. Last week’s episode frustratingly seemed to take the decision out of Damon’s hands completely, as Elena remembered Damon telling her in season four he didn’t want to take the cure because he didn’t want to be human. Because she was 19, Damon could take the cure from her, and Elena would just live out her normal human life like nothing happened.

She takes the cure and is compelled to leave town. But it wasn't until later that they finally addressed how they feel about one another.
