The confusion arises from an assumption that if there is no definite article in the Greek, then it must have an indefinite meaning and thus should be translated with the indefinite article "a". Another common confusion in John 1:1 comes from the fact that in Greek there is no definite articlein front of the word ‘God’ (‘theos’) in the phrase ‘and the Word was God’. 1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not.
