It is most commonly found in areas of poorly draining soil and areas of heavy dew.
What We Can Learn From the Near-Death of the Banana Much of the world's bananas are of the Cavendish variety, which is endangered by a strain of Panama disease… In March 2015 it was detected on Cavendish banana plants at a property in North Queensland. There are quite a number of banana plant diseases that can afflict this plant as well. Since then, further detections in different areas of the same property have been confirmed. Photo: The department says the farm is close to the previously infested properties. It is now considered to be present in Queensland and under official control. They make up around 50% of all banana production globally. Cavendish Bananas are the classic banana across the world. (ABC News: Casey Briggs) Cavendish bananas are the fruits of a banana cultivar belonging to the Cavendish subgroup called AAA cultivar group. The same term is also used to describe the plants on which the bananas grow. Like most Banana varieties, they grow quite tall and require good feeding and watering to crop well. Although an older variety, Cavendish only came into prominence in the 1950’s after Panama Disease made production of the Gros Michel variety impossible. The initial stages show small, pale spots on the leaves that gradually enlarge to about a half-inch (1.25 cm.) The Cavendish banana may have had a remarkable journey from colonial curiosity to global staple. Desperate, the predecessors of Chiquita and Dole switched production to a banana they knew to be resistant to Panama disease, despite its relatively bland flavor: the now-ubiquitous Cavendish… Sigatoka – Sigatoka, also known as leaf spot, is caused by the fungus Mycospharella musicola. They include commercially important cultivars like 'Dwarf Cavendish' and 'Grand Nain'. The disease does not affect the fruit itself, but rapidly kills Cavendish banana plants. Panama disease Tropical Race 4 (TR4) is considered one of the most destructive diseases of banana plants worldwide.
